Mission
The Bureau du taxi's mission is to improve the taxi services offered to Montreal's citizens and visitors.
Mandate
The Bureau du taxi is in charge renewing permits for taxis in Montreal. It also gives examinations and issues permits to those to pass. It ensures compliance of the permit holders with the taxi laws and regulations.
The Bureau du taxi also takes care of all the complaints from the publics and keeps close ties with the representatives of the Montreal's taxi industry. It is also in charge of issuing driver's liscences and registration under an agreement with the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

Next, the driver in question will be contacted for his version of the events. If the complaint is justified, the taxi driver will receive a statement of offence. If he contests the statement of offence, the complainant must come to court.
General information about taxi
The price of a fare, to which a rate per kilometre is added, is displayed on the taximeter. Rates do not differ on evening s or weekends. Receipt available upon request. Tipping is customary but not mandatory.When the rooflight is turned on on the top of the cab, the taxi is available for a client. When the rooflight is turned off, the driver is waiting for a customer or on the way to pick one up.
There are more than 420 taxi stands and 4445 taxi cabs in Montreal.
How to get a taxi driver's liscence
In order to drive a taxi in Québec, you must have a class 4c driver’s license. To obtain a class 4c license, you must meet the conditions stated by the Société de l'Assurance-autmobile du Québec (SAAQ), available here.Once you have your license, you must register for a course at one of the following schools:

After passing an examination at one of these schools, the school will register you for an examination at the Bureau du taxi et du remorquage. Once you have passed the BTR exam, you will receive your taxi license.
