how to be a taxi driver

OBTAIN CLASS 4C DRIVER'S LISCENCE

The first thing that you require to become a taxi driver is to obtain a taxi driver's permit which requires a class 4c or higher (1, 2, 3, 4a, 4b) driver's liscence.  This liscence can be acquired at the SAAQ (Société d'assurance automobile du Québec)


ENROLL TO A TAXI SCHOOL

Once you have obtained the required liscence, you must enter a taxi training school such as :

Applicants who wish to work in Montreal, must complete a 150-hour trainning course, including a 90 hours on the area's toponymy and geography.

To obtain a taxi driver's permit valid in Montreal, one must take an appoitement with Bureaudu taxietdu remorquage de la ville de Montréal at 514-280-6600.  The examination fee is $100.

Finally, once you have acquired the training and the taxi driver's permit, you may start working on an existing taxi cab.

TAXI VEHICLE CRITERIAS

The car or vehicle must respect the following general criterias:
  • a sedan-type automobile designed by the manufacturer to transport no more than 9 people
  • a van whose net weight is less than 3500 kilograms, designed by the manufacturer to transport no more than 9 people
  • a vehicle with a least 4 doors
  • a vehicle equipped with a rigid roof

MAXIMUM AGE OF TAXI VEHICLE

The vehicle registerd to the taxi permit cannot be more than 10 years old (ie. in 2011, the vehicle must be from 2002 or more).

When a permit owner changes the taxi vehicle, the new car must not be older than 5 years old from the date of production (ie. in 2011, the new vehicle must be from 2007 or more).

TAXI VEHICLE WHEELBASE

The taxi vehicle must have a minimum wheelbase of 261 centimeters.



VEHICLE CHANGE

  1. Purchase a vehicle
  2. The new vehicle must pass mechanical inspection.  Find the nearest mechanical inspection shop here
  3. Uninstall the rooflight/domelight, taximeter, radio and all the accessories at Maxcomm Radio
  4. Install the taxi equipment at Maxcomm Radio
  5. Register the new vehicle at Bureau du taxi located at 4949 rue Molson, Montreal, QC, H1Y 3H6, 514-280-6596
  6. Finally, you are done!
